3M will launch the first micro projector!!!

September 18th, 2008 by Alex Moros

So far we have talked several times about projectors in mobile phones, micro projectors as design concepts… and finally we can say that it has come to real life! 3M has developed the first micro projector, which name is MPro110.

But this is not a projector in a mobile device, just a micro projector itself. Its size is not yet small enough to fit in a mobile phone, but 3M promises to get it smaller (and brighter and with higher screen resolution) in the coming years.

Let’s talk now about some features:

  • Size: it’s palm-sized!!!
  • Price: it will be around $359 and it will be shipped at the end of this month.
  • Lamp: it uses liquid crystal on silicon and LCD on a mirror that bounces light out the front of the projector.
  • Fan & sound?: it doesn’t have a fan neither speakers.
  • Display: it can display a VGA image (640 x 480) up to 50 inches diagonally. For this purpose, the lamp of the projector is over a moveable surface, that you can move to point the image diagonally at any surface. It has a rate of 60 frames per second (TV quality).
  • Inputs: it’s got VGA and composite video inputs. Also inputs for memory cards ands USB port.
  • Focus: it has a thumb wheel on the top to focus the image.

Other companies are developing similar products, like Texas Instruments, which uses LED
and its DLP imaging chip, similar to what you get in rear projection TVs from
Samsung.

Great news, of course, we have been excited since the first micro projector concepts and prototypes. I want one of these!!!

iPhone sales falling in Japan

September 18th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

When Softbank announced iPhone release date in Japan I thought it would reach a great success. I was mistaken.

I made my own survey to know what japanese youth really think about the iPhone 3G, and Erika asked that iPhone success in Japan would depend on its features (in terms of radio wave, battery live, usability…).

Apple sold 200,000 iPhones in Japan in the first two months, success was announced, and I was happy because of people who didn´t trust me ;-), Even Ungatonippon published an article where shows lot of magazines created exclusively for the iPhone. Japanese loved iPhone!

In spite of this, iPhone sales are falling in Japan, and i have to say I am so sad :(, with demand declining to such a point that analysts now believe that the phone won’t even hit the half a million mark (Apple had thought it could sell one million in Japan).

On the other hand, Japan’s cell phone market is one of the world’s most sophisticated with its own set of popular features. Indeed, some Japanese buyers of the iPhone were carrying their old ones as well to specifically access those features. Of course it is the main iPhone handicap. It is cool, but not useful in Japan, where people even use their mobile phone to pay the meal.

Therefore, Softbank, the exclusive Japanese carrier of the iPhone, has already lowered tariffs once to make the gadget more cost-friendly to younger buyers. But analysts believe that iPhone should make more of its AppStore, to show what the gadget can do.

“Impossible is nothing”(adidas©) but Apple must make a good effort to help boost Japanese sales.

Touch Diamond VR Hologram

September 16th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Hologram mania is here, some weeks ago we reported about a hologram app for the iPhone, and now a similar application for the HTC Touch Diamond.

VR Hologram very similar to the wii Head Tracking VR demo made famous on youtube.
Uses G-Sensor to track tilt and update the VR Hologram view accordingly. 3D Hologram created using Managed Direct 3D Mobile (MD3DM). Found it easier to learn than the Managered wrapper for Opengl ES.

First Release V.1

MD3DM Graphics
G-Sensor view tilt (smoothed using moving average)
Nav sensor zoom
Tap screen to exit

This is Pauloke´s first 3D app/game and also his first windows mobile app, and he say this is only a concept can also be used to show those without the Diamond it abilities.

Congratulations! It is incredible! :D

Google Mobile App for BlackBerry

September 15th, 2008 by Alberto Aparicio

A few days ago Google launched Google Mobile App for BlackBerry.
Google Mobile App lets you access to:

  • Search
  • Maps
  • GMail
  • Calendar
  • Docs
  • GOOG-411
  • News
  • Photos
  • Reader
  • Notepad

The absence of Google Talk and non-management of the applications may be the negative note from both the Google Mobile app and the Google Mobile site.

On the other hand, Google has improved other features, such as:

  • Searches faster
  • History searches
  • Complete queries (Google suggest)
  • Updates alerts

If you visit m.google.com on your BlackBerry, you can download and install the application, allowing you to get immediate access to all applications.

I hope soon get versions for all devices. Many of us want to get access to this application but we don’t have a BlackBerry. :(
