Net60 commercially launched

May 5th, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

RedFiveLabs have finally launched to the market Net60. What is Net60? In short, it’s a Symbian S60 port of Microsoft’s .Net Compact Framework 1.0.

Every people involved in Symbian based development during his career will probably agree that this is the toughest mobile development environments. The tool chain utilities have improved during the years, but it is still far away from other environments such as Windows Mobile or JME.

That’s why Net60 is specially interesting. Developers will be able to write and test C# code in Microsoft’s Visual Studio, eventually deploying the resulting application in Symbian based mobile phones.

Anyway, Net60 is only .Net Compact Framework 1.0 complaint. Current standard is 2.0 version, which is less error-prone and have important improvements to the 1.0 release. This is the main drawback of this software.

iPhonishing: Makayama TouchBrowser

April 25th, 2008 by Javier Rubio

Just some months have passed since the first iPhones reached the streets, but that´s more than enough for becoming the main reference in interactive interfaces.

It hasn´t been a big deal, though. Rivals like HTC Touch with its TouchFLO interface or Nokia N95 “n-gage flavoured” are magnificent competitors, but have nothing to do against the Apple iPhone style.

And now, thanks to Makayama TouchBrowser, all of us who can´t afford the price of an iPhone will be able to enjoy an iPhone-style Internet browser for our Windows Mobile gadgets, which means you will forget the stylus at last!. Thanks god for releasing us of the old scroll suffering!

Next 6th of May, HTC is going to present his new phones.

Among them we can probably see a mobile booted Android and the other ones booted Windows Mobile interface Manila (new version of TouchFLO).

Yesteday at CTIA Wireless 2008, Las Vegas, Microsoft oficially announced the release of Windows Mobile 6.1 and an upgrade for Internet Explorer Mobile.

Microsoft has listed several new phones and updates for this brand new WM 6.1, that will be available soon. Check the post of Windows Mobile Team Blog or the press release for the list.

WM 6.1 most important improvements are:

  • Redesigned home screen
  • Built-in Task Manager
  • Copy&paste support for non-touch devices
  • Faster Bluetooth setup
  • Significant improvements in performance
  • Significan improvements in battery life

On the other hand, the new version of IE Mobile will be availabe later this year. Microsoft claims it ” adds desktop-grade Web browsing to Windows Mobile phones”.

We will be happy to see that, since current IE Mobile is very far from meeting the needs of a modern PDA internet browser.

MobileXpdf, a free PDF reader for WM

April 2nd, 2008 by Rafael García

null

There are many applications for Windows Mobile for reading PDF files. But not many are for free, like MobileXpdf.

MobileXpdf is an open source project based on the Xpdf project, a PDF viewer for the X Windows System of Linux. The application is licensed under GPL. So that, in addition to enjoy its features for free, we can have a look at it source code.

Very interesting from a developer point of view, as here we have the source code of a PDF library for Windows Mobile. I must confess I did know no one.

For those not-so-geek people, you can download CABs files targetting WM 2003 SE, WM 5 and WM 6 and install it easily in your device.

Face Contact

March 31st, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Face Contact is the new application for Windows Mobile created by CNetX in which you can manage your contacts with a “cover flow” interface.

Features:

  • Perform all kinds of contact management operations, such as adding, editing or removing contacts.
  • Initiate common contact-related tasks, such as starting a phone call, sending text messages and email, or browsing a contact’s web page.
  • Sort or rearrange contacts by different criteria, at any time.
  • Jump instantly to specific positions in the contact list based on the contact’s initial.
  • Keep full control of index/position in the list even when rapidly scrolling through your contacts.

You can download Face Contact now as a demo version for 10 days or buy it for only 9.45€.

That is the coolest way i have never seen to use the contact list, but the interface is obviously copied from Apple´s Cover Flow. : (
