Skype has announced new ports of its mobile VoIP software. The new versions are JAVA based, and it currently covers devices by Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Motorola. Skype also announces that new models will be supported soon, so I you don’t find your mobile, you’ll probably do in the following weeks.
Skype for mobile is beta software. It has limited support for Skype to Mobile calls, only available in certain markets such as Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Not that bad.
What’s most surprising for me is the fact that Skype for mobiles is based on Java. I think it’s a great support for the Java platform, as long as it proves that Java is more than games.

I love Fring (in fact, if you have read my last posts related to it you could have find it out by yourself ). It’s one of the most interesting applications I’ve ever found for my PDA Phone.
Now, Fring announces a great feature: file transfer. The functionality works from mobile to mobile and mobile to pc. It currently supports fring to fring and fring to MSN, and viceversa. More protocols to be supported soon.
Forget about MMS, bluetooth, infrared or cable connections to send your pictures to your PC. Just Fring them!!!!

Fring guys are awesome. This VoIP and Instant Messaging client is little by little turning into a “must-have” application. If you have a Windows Mobile or Symbian based smartphone, you must donwload and install this little miracle.
Some time ago, Fring added support for Yahoo! and AOL AIM, but only for Symbian devices. Now, Windows Mobile versions also include this feature. The number of supported IM services is almost complete with this two additions.

Voice over IP, performed on a mobile phone, is the future of telecommunications as well as the network operators’ biggest threat.
We already wrote about Gizmodo when, in september, a new version for Java-enabled mobile devices was released.
Now, both the Symbian and the Java versions, have been updated to version 1.1.006. Apart from performance and stability improvements, a new contact search functionality have been included.
Download the new version here (For Nokia N73, N80, N81 N82 & N95).

SvSIP has been successfully ported to iPod Touch, so an iPhone version will surely appear in next days.
A enthusiastic post mentions the successful port being able to make and receive IP Calls. There is very little information curreently, only several screenshots, but I think it’s a beggining.
For all of you who doesn’t know what SvSIP is, here is the official explanation of the application, directly extracted from its website. Enjoy it!!
SvSIP is a software that you allow to use your Nintendo DS like phone. For this, it uses SIP protocol. This protocol is an open standard for creating, modifying, and terminating sessions with one or more participants. It is widely used as a signaling protocol for Voice over IP.
This software is under development, it currently allows:

More and more rumours and spreading all over internet about the almost certain coming of the GPhone.
A previous debate subject was to establish the GPhone either a iPhone or a Windows Mobile Competitor but now everybody is talking about the future struggle between Google and the mobile carriers.
It’s obvious that Google is suggesting a bussiness model totally opossed to the actual one, where applications can be freely used in every handset, especially VoIP (which is free and the carrier greatest threat). In addition mobile software develpment is gaining momentum day after day, with more and more people working in giving mobile phone a broader functionality. What will be the impact of this (almost) certain release?

It is no secret that VoIP calls is about to become a threat to regular home and office calls business.
While its main advantage is clear, it is “free”, it used to have many drawbacks:
While WiFi hotspots are spreading all around many cities, handset processing power is having an exponential growth. Moreover, Skype (which is obviously focused on VoIP) is about to launch its own mobile phone. Does this mean that VoIP is finally going to overthrow regular phone calls?
It is not clear. Although it has many strong opportunities (i.e. international calls, far cheaper than regular calls), the sell of this phone will be a hard one as some operators like AT&T have already banned VoIP in some of their handsets…
Personally, I’d like to watch the success of VoIP over regular calls as a triumph of technology over money. What do you think?
