Nokia beta labs in action

January 31st, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

This week has been quite bussy for the Nokia Beta Labs peoble as they have released two new beta services: Location Tagger and Mobile Site Widgets.

Location Tagger.

This small application, which runs on some high-end S60 3rd edition Nokia devices, allows the user to tag pictures previously captured from the Camera application and add geographical coordinates from GPS. This information is stored in the EXIF header of the pictures.

The next step is quite obvious. The user will be able to send the pictures, usually to any of the picture upload most famous services (Flickr, Panoramio,…). If this service is integrated with Google Earth,l ike for instance Picasa, the pictures will be displayed in a map showing the user’s position, from they were taken.

Read more info at Nokia Location Tagger web site.

Mobile Site Widgets.

This set of applications is built on top of Mobile Web Server technology. Their aim is to run some applications on the PC showing information about the phone and provide access to some features like SMS sending. The goal of these widgets is to integrate the mobile phone into the mobile user’s “desktop experience” by providing him / her with improved UI features of the PC (screen & keyboard).

Moreover, this platform can be extended by the user by developing additional widgets. Here is the with some tutorials and how-tos.Read more info at My Mobile Site Widgets web site.

Nokia and Facebook working on a deal

January 24th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Nokia and Facebook are negotiating a new alliance in order to include a built-in direct access to the social network in every Nokia device. In addition Nokia may be developing an improved Symbian version of the social network application.

Obviously, this is another step further in the Nokia’s strategy to become an internet company (like the previous steps of launching the OVI platform, buying Navteq, Avvenu, Mosh…). The next logical step would be to buy one of the most famous Web 2.0 applications…. but which one?

Although not confirmed, there is a rumour that refers to a possible purchase of a stake of Facebook by Nokia, thus confirming the Nokia’s will to become an internet giant.

NBA 2 Go. Would you pay for it?

January 17th, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

I’ve read an interesting post in MobileCrunch about NBA 2 Go and the cost of the service. I’m going to summarize the scenario in order to allow you to obtain your own conclusions about it.

Until now, you were able to access NBA Mobile to check NBA information on the go. Now, NBA have launched a new application based service called NBA 2 Go, charging a variable amount of money for it (from $2.99 to $9.99, depending on the carrier). You don’t pay for the application but for the service. The information provided is little more than the NBA Mobile version. Moreover, all this content is already available on the web.

I don’t find the point in these kind of services. Why should I pay for something I already have available? Why mobility should be a luxury? I don’t really know the number of people paying for such service, but I suspect that not so much. It’s true that creating these applications takes time and money, but NBA can afford it easily. The marketing benefits obtain for this application freely distributed are surely more valuable than the cost of creating the application.

Would you pay for such a service?

Fring supports Yahoo! and AOL AIM in Windows Mobile

January 2nd, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

Fring guys are awesome. This VoIP and Instant Messaging client is little by little turning into a “must-have” application. If you have a Windows Mobile or Symbian based smartphone, you must donwload and install this little miracle.

Some time ago, Fring added support for Yahoo! and AOL AIM, but only for Symbian devices. Now, Windows Mobile versions also include this feature. The number of supported IM services is almost complete with this two additions.

Sogecable and mobile operator Orange, have agreed to launch, by the start of 2008, a joint service composed of:

  • Regular mobile phone service.
  • High-speed Internet.
  • Pay-per-view television.

In a press release, both companies said that the service will include television contents for Orange’s third-generation mobile users.

The company didn’t provide neither financial details of the agreement, nor information about the number of subscribers they hope to add with the new services.

Last June, Sogecable signed a similar agreement with Telefónica, as Spanish telecom operator looking forward to combining television, Internet and voice calls in a single package to boost revenue and compete with others operators.

NTT DoCoMo integrates i-mode with Google Apps

December 26th, 2007 by Álvaro Arregui

Nowadays, in Japan, there is a fierce struggle between two mobile operators (NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank) in order to gain the leadership of the huge Japanese mobile market.

First, Yahoo (search engine leader in Japan), launched, along with Softbank a set of applications to be used over the mobile phone. Now, NTT DoCoMo and Google have come to an agreement to do the same.

By the end of the next Spring, NTT DoCoMo users will be able to access Google search, e-mail, scheduling and photo features through the i-mode service.

This strategic alliance is aimed to increase the number of users as it has been reduced lately due legal changes in Japan. However NTT DoCoMo stocks have risen 3.3 percent since the news release.

N-Gage Delayed again

December 26th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

And this is the second time in two months!!! Nokia N-Gage’s blog has announced that the longly awaited and announced game service won’t be beta released (don’t miss this last thing. BETA released) till 2008. In fact, Nokia doesn’t give a date to launch the service, which makes me thing that neither Nokia knows when the service will be ready.

The reason for the delay is a bug found during the beta testing process. It must be a really big and problematical bug, as long as N-Gage is going to be released in Beta version. And this is all the information we have. Unfortunately, SevenClick is not part of N-Gage beta testers.

Not good news for Nokia. Let’s see how this ends up.
