JARPA

May 26th, 2008 by Javier Rubio

Jarpa is a newborn baby which seeks packaging Flash Lite into Java ME. It still lacks of documentation, just some on Google groups. As the authors said in their website, ” Jarpa allows Java ME and Flash Lite Developers extend their mobile applications like in Flyer Framework or Janus but with the widespread acceptance of Java ME and Flash Lite mobile devices.”

Good Luck, Jarpa!

Firmware update for N95, including Flash Lite 3 and WRT

March 18th, 2008 by Rafael García

SymbianFreak quotes ‘trusted source’ for announcing that a firmware update for Nokia N95 is about to come. This new release would include Flash Lite 3 and WebRunTime (support for widgets).

This will make available for N95 this new and promising mobile technologies. Nokia uses to forget older handsets in some way, thus releasing firmware updates only for newer ones. So, this release is really welcomed.

It should be available soon on Nokia Software Update, and then in the official Nokia Points and Nokia Service Points.

Of course, the new firmware improves general stability and performance of N95 as well as fixes some known bugs. SymbianFreak includes all the change log in his post.

SilverLight running on a Nokia S60

March 6th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Nokia will support Microsoft SilverLight on its S60 devices, who runs the Symbian operating system. Availability for S40 devices are not confirmed yet.

This is the last agreement set between the RedMond guys and the finnish manufacturer, that will greatly improve the number of mobile phone users that might use Microsoft tecnology in their devices. In addition, a demonstration is scheduled today inside the Mix 08 event, as well as the release of a Software Development Kit (SDK) by the second middle of this year.

Of course, all these operations are inside the context of the “war” for the mobile browser’s video player that is currently fough between Microsoft SilverLight and Adobe Flash Lite.

Worm detected in S60 devices

February 18th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Recently, a worm has been detected in a lot of S60 devices around the world. Its functionality is as easy as potentially harmful (specially to your phone bill):

  • An MMS message is received, containing either of the following subjects: “Sex.mp3″, “Beauty.jpg” or “Loce.rm”
  • If opened, the worm reads all the entries in your phone book and send them a reply of the original message.
  • In addition, the worm also generates random phone numbers and send them more messages.

A rule of thumb that usually helps to avoid infection, is not to open this sort of files. It seems obvious, but if you look at the infection figures, not for many people.

Fring adds support to file transfer

February 8th, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

I love Fring (in fact, if you have read my last posts related to it you could have find it out by yourself ). It’s one of the most interesting applications I’ve ever found for my PDA Phone.

Now, Fring announces a great feature: file transfer. The functionality works from mobile to mobile and mobile to pc. It currently supports fring to fring and fring to MSN, and viceversa. More protocols to be supported soon.

Forget about MMS, bluetooth, infrared or cable connections to send your pictures to your PC. Just Fring them!!!!

Wordpress Application to blog from your Nokia S60

January 21st, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

Telewaving has presented “Wavelog”, a Symbian based application that allows Nokia S60users to blog from their mobile phones. The application exposes advanced blogging capabilites, allowing users to upload pictures, videos, audio,etc.. along with text, obviously. There is a free test version without advanced content creation capabilites. The commercial version costs US$10.

Mobile applications are, day by day, growing in terms of capabilities. It’s really interesting to be able to blog from your mobile phone in a similar way than you do from your desktop. Ah, MobileWhack mentions “Wavelog” is a Noka N95 application. Telewaving says that it has been tested on this device, but It is compatible with Nokia S60 platform phones. I don’t know which exact S60 version, since the documentation doesn’t mention it.
