Record your world through your phone

September 5th, 2008 by Marta Tejel

Can you imagine that your phone could track your life, saving some of your visual and audio memories, and then showing them to you in a way that you can navigate through them easily?

This is a reality for NSeries users with the Nokia Vine mobile application. Nokia viNe works with the GPS, camera and media player, recording your location and movements and geo-tagging your photos and video, and the songs you listen to.

You can upload this captured information to the Nokia viNe website and access to them either on a timeline or on a Map. You can display your journeys online,  the web plots your route alongside your media, and also share them, filtering by user, place or time. There is also an online widget which you can place on your blog or Facebook page, allowing others to see what you’ve been up to.

This is a perfect tool for travellers, which help them to remember almost exactly how were their trips.

Google Chrome for mobile devices

September 4th, 2008 by amoros

Two days ago Google launched its new web browser, called Google Chrome. Quickly lots of people downloaded it to have a try and see how it worked. After some testing time I can say that it does run fast. With high probability, the reason is the new browser engine it uses, launching each website and tab like a new process and in a smart and easy way.

But after testing it I thought “Ok but, will Google provide a Chrome version for mobile devices?”. And surprisingly I got an answer from Sergey Brin, Google co-founder, who talked about this in an interview at the Chrome launch event. In the event he said that Chrome will make its way to Android, the company’s mobile phone operating system and software suite.

Brin also said that both Android and Chrome have been developed separately but that now the two projects are public and nearing their first final releases, it’s probably that Android’s browser “is going to pick up a lot of the Chrome stack”, pointing to JavaScript improvements as one area. Chrome and Android’s current browser both already employ WebKit, an open-source project for the process of interpreting the HTML code that makes up a Web page and rendering it on a screen, what makes them get closer.

With this on-working state browser and the current mobile browsers, we start to have the chance to choose a web browser for our mobile device, although in some cases it depends on the O.S. our device has. Below you can find a little table with the current mobile web browsers, the O.S. they support and the development state.

I wish all these browsers were cross platform and then we could forget about our device O.S. and choose the one we like most even if we change our phone.

iPhone as a 3G modem? Probably soon

September 2nd, 2008 by admin

Why people can use their mobile phone as a 3G modem and iPhone users not? Maybe because “Steve” or somebody from AT&T don´t want make it real. Why not?

There was an application on the APP Store some time ago, today banned by Apple because of the AT&T complaints, which allowed you to connect your iPhone on your computer and use it as a modem.

Today, rumors on internet claims that Apple and AT&T are working together on an similar application, like the app banned before. This app or service would be probably not for free as RIM makes on BlackBerry (30$ per month).

Be an iPhone owner is hard, I know, but I want it now and for free! :D

If you have your iPhone jailbroken can use it as a 3G modem, but in a harder way. Check this post to know how.

Competitive Simyo Mobile Internet Data Plans

August 14th, 2008 by Marta Tejel

Simyo, a low cost Mobile Virtual Operator, has launched an internet flat-rate for 24,99€/month, one of the cheapest in the market.

The maximum speed is 3,6Mbs, but the speed drop to 128Kbs when the first 5G of data have been downloaded. On the other hand there is no limit on downloading and P2P traffic is totally allowed. Some of the drawbacks are that this data plans are only enabled to mobiles with contract and the connection only supports data connections (no voice).

Simyo Spain was born on January 2008 on the Orange network but, before that, it had been already operated by KPN in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. It is an online telecom operator (it has no stores), so that is how they keep their rates so low. If you are interested in this offer you can make yourself a new Simyo user through its web site.

Fennec: the concept made real

August 12th, 2008 by Javier Rubio

Some weeks ago the Firefox Mobile Concept spread over the specialized blogosphere. It´s well known how Mozilla works and how much they care for the quality of their software, and we could hardly wait for a first beta. Unfortunately, such event still don´t have a concrete date as Fennec (the product codename) has just born and is in a pre-alpha development stage.

We´ll have to stay in wait since 9th September for a first official alpha release, but right now Fennec it´s more than a concept: its Milestone 6 (M6) provides a functional prototype working on Linux devices like Nokia Internet Table N8x0 (install instructions here), showing a beautiful UI as well as nice tabs: the concept made real.

According to the official Fennec Requirements, M7 is going to be released next tuesday. This milestone is the last one before the first alpha, and for sure it will sketch out even better the future line of the browser. Anyway, after being able to test the concept on a touch-screen device, would be great to test M7 on a simpler smartphone without touch capabilities.

MobileMe keeps having troubles…

August 5th, 2008 by amoros

Seems to be that MobileMe service from Apple keeps having troubles. The new hiccup is that MobileMe users cannot access to their e-mail section. Apple has said in a bulletin that this is a known problem and that is affecting less than 1% of the users. Though, if we have a quick look at the Apple discussion boards we realize that actually there is an increasing number of users being affected without finding a solution on Apple’s support team.

Besides, some British users who signed up for a free trial of the service, have been charged in their accounts with 121 pre-authorization Pounds. Apple has “solved” this problem providing these users with additional 30 days of free service. So these customers can enjoy a total of 120 days trial service: initial 30 day free credit + 60 day trial + additional 30 day trial. This solution is ok, but would have been better not charging those 121 Pounds.

10 commandments to mobilize

August 4th, 2008 by admin

W3C has released its 10 commandments to be a great mobile parishioner :D

  1. Design for one web. Content designed with diverse devices in mind reduces cost, increases flexibility, and reaches the needs of more people.
  2. Rely on web standards. In the highly fragmented market of devices and browsers, standards are the best guarantee for interoperability.
  3. Stay away from known hazards. Thoughtful design can help reduce usability problems due to small screens and keyboards, and other features of mobile devices.
  4. Be cautious of device limitations. When choosing to use a particular Web technology, consider that mobile devices vary greatly in capability.
  5. Optimize navigations. Simple navigation and typing become critical when using a small screen and keyboard, and limited bandwidth.
  6. Check graphics & colors. Images, colors, and style brighten content, but require care: devices may have low-contrast screens or may not support some formats.
  7. Keep it small. Smaller sites make users happier by costing less in time and money.
  8. Use the network sparingly. Web protocol features can help improve the user experience by reducing the impact of network bottlenecks and latencies.
  9. Help & guide user input. Keyboards and other input methods on mobile devices can be tedious to use, so effective designs minimize the need for them.
  10. Think of users on the go. Web users on the go want compact information when time is short and distractions many.

Please follow the father´s word to navigate in a better mobile web world.

Amen :D
