Opera Widgets SDK

May 23rd, 2008 by Javier Rubio

Do you think Opera is a minor alternative? I really don´t have any numbers, but from my view, Firefox and Safari have been increasing their fans, as well as Opera has not ever been noticed as a strong competitor on desktops systems (do you know someone using it on his/her desktop? ).

Opera´s main advantage is its focus on mobile devices on the last years, which results are good: now it´s the preferred option for web-browsing on Windows Mobile devices, and probably also for less powerful devices (thanks to Opera Mini, whose 4.1 version was released recently).

Now Opera has played an intelligent move, with the new Opera Widgets SDK Beta. This SDK allows you to create widgets (mini-apps) which will work on desktops AND mobile devices (not only smartphones, even ARCHOS multimedia devices). So this cross-platform capabilities may be a good leap on desktop systems, we will see how well those widgets integrate and how much people likes and uses them. I would bet for a system who lets me use the same little app on my desktop, mobile, PDA, Nintendo Wii or other devices.

The SDK is open source and follows the same pattern of other SDKs like Google´s Web Toolkit or iPhone´s SDK (even in the logo image! lol). It provides useful libraries for I/O, RSS, Graphics, etc; as well as lots of info, an emulator and DragonFly (Opera´s Firebug).

Now it´s your time for installing Opera and trying some widgets from the Opera Widgets site.

Mimique Cell Phone

May 22nd, 2008 by Alberto Aparicio

At present mobile phones are more like a PDA than a cell phone.

For people who want a mobile phone in which only have installed what they need and have a relay telephone and personal well see exactly what they need, the RKS Group Design has created the Mimique.

Where the Mimique really sets itself apart is that it is designed to take advantage of the new, open-source cell phone technologies being developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance.

The combination of open source software and touch-screen technology will make the Mimique easily upgradable and will extend the lifespan of the phone , because of to add new features enough to download the new functionality.

Brightkite, the new microblogging.

April 30th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Brightkite is not another microblogging tool, it is like twitter or Pownce, but with some handy location-based features. It let you see what people around you are doing in real time.

You can attach your current position to small 140 character posts, it also lets you see who is around you based on when they “checked in.

Users can create for places they frequent often and meet people who do the same activities, like gym or café, in order to avoid having to type it out each time they post.

Maybe it is one of the best options of microblogging available for mobile. You can create an account now, but is still a beta.

Google has recently announced the availability of mobile image ads for AdWorks and AdSense. Supported image formats are JPEG, GIF y PNG.

RSS feed to an iPhone Web app

March 26th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Good news for iPhone owners! a new service created by TheSMESpace converts any well formed XML RSS feed to an iPhone-optimized version with the typical sliding style interface.

Jim Liddle, one of the creators of the service, told “You can book mark the generated site and use it to host your own content and reference it from your own site.”, That sounds great!

If you are on iPhone now, take a look to SevenClick blog optimized.

.mobi DeviceAtlas

March 19th, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

If  you normally follow our blog, you might be aware of how difficult is developing Mobile Websites. There is a plethora of formats, standards and device features that must be taken into account by mobile web developers.

.mobi has created its own solution to this problem. Unfortunately, not for free. This is the service explanation, according to .mobi site:

“DeviceAtlas is the world’s most comprehensive database of mobile device information. Everything you ever wanted to know about every handset on the planet. Search and view the data for free, and then download into your applications so that you can thrill your users - whatever handset they own.”

Searching and viewing the data is for free, but when you eventually include the information in your application, you must buy a license. Strange, taking into account that WURFL, the de-facto standard for device identification, is a free and open-source solution massively addopted by the community. DeviceAtlas claims WURFL as one of their information sources, among others.

I personally think that this kind of solutions should be provided for free. Probably W3C should be more actively involved. They are currently standardizing their own device database. But, you know, things are easy and slow there.
