Google has recently announced the availability of mobile image ads for AdWorks and AdSense. Supported image formats are JPEG, GIF y PNG.

TeaShark, an alternative to Opera Mini

March 26th, 2008 by Rafael García

“The full web on your phone, fast and free”. This is the answer to the “What’s TeaShark?” question on TeaShark website.

The first beta of TeaShark has just been released. It is JME-based browser targetting MIDP2.0, that relies on a proxy for rendering. The render engine is based on WebKit3 (the last release of the most popular browser rendering engine).

Some included features are: tabbed browsing, bookmarks management, browsing session recording, autocomplete in text boxes,…

We’ll have to keep an eye on the evolution of this new actor on mobile browser arena.

March 26th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Good news for iPhone owners! a new service created by TheSMESpace converts any well formed XML RSS feed to an iPhone-optimized version with the typical sliding style interface.

Jim Liddle, one of the creators of the service, told “You can book mark the generated site and use it to host your own content and reference it from your own site.”, That sounds great!

If you are on iPhone now, take a look to SevenClick blog optimized.

.mobi DeviceAtlas

March 19th, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

If  you normally follow our blog, you might be aware of how difficult is developing Mobile Websites. There is a plethora of formats, standards and device features that must be taken into account by mobile web developers.

.mobi has created its own solution to this problem. Unfortunately, not for free. This is the service explanation, according to .mobi site:

“DeviceAtlas is the world’s most comprehensive database of mobile device information. Everything you ever wanted to know about every handset on the planet. Search and view the data for free, and then download into your applications so that you can thrill your users - whatever handset they own.”

Searching and viewing the data is for free, but when you eventually include the information in your application, you must buy a license. Strange, taking into account that WURFL, the de-facto standard for device identification, is a free and open-source solution massively addopted by the community. DeviceAtlas claims WURFL as one of their information sources, among others.

I personally think that this kind of solutions should be provided for free. Probably W3C should be more actively involved. They are currently standardizing their own device database. But, you know, things are easy and slow there.

Adobe has announced that Flash Lite 3 and Acrobat Reader LE software will be available soon on windows mobile platforms, as a plugin for Internet Explorer Mobile.

Of course Flash Lite will allow streaming media sites such as YouTube on your handset, and we´ll can open and view PDF files with Acrobat Reader LE. But, Flash Lite content will only be supported inside this browser, but we wont can use an standalone contents. :(

We have good news, because Adobe has confirmed that Flash Lite 3 does support touch screen events on devices touch screen based. Maybe someday on iPhone? (Even Apple confirmed last week his negative about using this plugin.)

Skyfire, a new browser for Windows Mobile

March 6th, 2008 by Rafael García

Since some days ago we have a new contender in mobile browser war. Skyfire is a venture-backed company based in Mountain View, California, with a “mission to dramatically improve your browsing experience on mobile phones”.

They claim to have created “the only mobile browser that delivers both the speed and media-rich experience similar to the PC browser”. In fact, they say that “Skyfire browser supports the same web technologies that PC browsers support, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Flash, Ajax, QuickTime, Java, Windows Media, and more”.

The way they do it is by means of “a brand new architecture that’s server assisted. It’s an asymmetric distributed approach where the server does the heavy lifting so the client is high performing”.

This is the way Opera Mini works, for instance, tough it seems that Skyfire is faster and supports more web technologies - they claim to support them all.

Unfortunately, this first release is a private beta version only available in U.S. It targets Windows Mobile, though another version for Symbian S60 is coming soon.

For those like us, non-U.S. residents, who can’t try the browser in our PDAs, Skyfire provide us with a demo video.

MySpace developing native iPhone app

March 6th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Myspace is developing a native app of the well-known web site for iphone (and itouch) using SDK to create it.

There aren´t too many details, but Myspace will be impressive compared to current mobile versions of the social networking site.

it´s unknow how it will support MySpace’s signature music and video services, perhaps if Apple reveals the support of Adobe Flash on his SDK.

moBlog: blogging for Windows Mobile

January 15th, 2008 by Rafael García

moBlog is a tool for bloggers with a Windows Mobile device. By now, you only can use this useful application if you are using Blogger, Wordpress or Live Spaces platforms. LiveJournal and MovableType support is planned, though no information i

This application is focused on writing posts, and it includes few functionality appart from that. The support for off-line mode is a very good feature. This way you only need network connectivity when you want to send the post to server.

Now, it also supports photo embedding and text formatting (bold, italic, underlining) in the posts.

Anyway, I would like to find further features in such a blogging tool. For example, a bit more advanced posts management and specially some kind of comments management. Writing a post is something I wouldn’t like to do from my Pocket PC. Instead, moderating comments would like a task I would rather do.
