Zeemote, Wii Style joystick for mobiles

January 3rd, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

If you are a usual mobile games player, you’ll agree that mobiles are not the best platform in terms of game control.  The keypad is insufficient to control arcade or action games, which need a minimum of 7 buttons to be played.

Zeetoo, a peripherals specialized company, has lately presented a new concept called Zeemote. Well, it’s not completely new, as long as it looks like Wii’s Nunchuck controller. Anyway, the device allows videogame controlling through a wireless peripheral control with one hand. Using bluetooth communication, players will be able to control games holding the mobile in one hand and in the Zeetoo in the other one.

Despite I don’t find mobile phones an interesting platform for game playing, I think that this kind of devices makes mobile gamers life easier (much easier in fact). Let’s see the market adoption.

N-Gage Delayed again

December 26th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

And this is the second time in two months!!! Nokia N-Gage’s blog has announced that the longly awaited and announced game service won’t be beta released (don’t miss this last thing. BETA released) till 2008. In fact, Nokia doesn’t give a date to launch the service, which makes me thing that neither Nokia knows when the service will be ready.

The reason for the delay is a bug found during the beta testing process. It must be a really big and problematical bug, as long as N-Gage is going to be released in Beta version. And this is all the information we have. Unfortunately, SevenClick is not part of N-Gage beta testers.

Not good news for Nokia. Let’s see how this ends up.

psx4iphone: PXS Emulator for the iPhone

December 26th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

Despite how appropriate is the iPhone to play video-console games, it’s clearly an interesting platform for eager developers. If you had a Sony Playstation console, you can recall your old Playstation games with psx4iphone. What’s this? a Playstation emulator for the iPhone. The software simulates (or emulates to be more precise) Sony Playstation hardware, being able to run Playstation games on the iPhone.

Id Software launches a mobile Studio

November 19th, 2007 by Álvaro Arregui

Id Software achieved, back in the 90’s, a great sucess with computer games such as the Doom series. Later, they started developing mobile games quite successfully, even winning prizes such as the 2006 Interactive Achievement Awards Mobile Game of the Year.

Now, along with FountainHead Entertainment, id Software has launched Id Mobile. Id Mobile is a studio focused on developing mobile phone games as well as for portables such as Nintendo DS and Play Station Portable (PSP). Of course, while keeping the innovating style of all Id previous releases.

The company objetives are to design and create games for mobile platforms which left far behind the products currently in the market. Quality entertainment, innovation and fun  are the key factor.

Here you can read an interview with Jonh Carmack.

XBox in Windows Mobile

November 6th, 2007 by Álvaro Arregui

Microsoft has announced that they are working to bring XBox Games to mobiles running Windows Mobile.

The control interface of a mobile phone isn’t the same of a console. Not all games will be adapted to this devices. Alike, the games that require more power won’t be addapted.

The most likely games to be adapted will be simple and addictive games currently available in XBox Arcade service.

Nokia N·Gage games platform delayed to December

November 5th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

Nokia has published in N·Gage official blog the confirmation of the delay that N·Gage platform will suffer. The new official date is December. Official sources mention two more weeks for platform testing purposes. Nothing serious in my opinion, since almost every software project suffers some delays. And this one should be considered as a minor one.

Nokia is also having problems with Ovi music service, where Warner has removed its music catalogue from Nokia because it fears copyright violations. Nokia has a file-sharing Web site called Mosh which is being used to distribute copyrighted material. The two companies are in talks to discuss Warner’s fears that its materials could be pirated.

Not very good news for Ovi. Starting the service platform with problems in the music service and a delay in the gaming service is not good at all.

Play on your S60 with WiiMote

October 5th, 2007 by Rafael García

Playing your favorite game on your mobile phone can be very disapointing due to keyboard constraints, if we can admit the bunch of keys that cell phones includes is a keyboard.

Some students from the University of Applied Sciences in Hagenberg, Austria, seem to have thought the same and they have developed a Bluetooth driver for S60 for connecting to WiiMote, the remote control of Wii console. Moreover, they have developed a freeware motorcycle racing game as a proof of concept. And they have released the source code, as well. Thanks a lot!

Just odd stuff, but very interesting. Perhaps we could use the WiiMote for controlling more things… or use its accelerometers as sensors for our cell phones and start to play with it for new applications.

Nokia N-Gage · Here we go again!!!!

August 28th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

After 3 years of silence, Nokia wants to return to the video games marketplace with the new N-Gage. As we can read in N-Gage’s blog, Nokia is making a very big effort to relaunch their mobile gaming platform. And not just re-redesigning the platform’s logo. They have signed agreements with companies like CAPCOM, creators of the Street Fighter and Resident Evil sagas among others, to develop games for the future N-Gage platform.
