As we mention yesterday via Twitter (@SevenClick), Movistar has confirmed us through their big accounts commercial staff, that they expect iPhone 4G available on presentation day to distribute to VIP clients (we have ordered 10 for TBSgroup ;-)

Remember that Steve Jobs will deliver the WWDC keynote on June 7th, so iPhone 4G could be very close to everybody.

Stay tunned!

MÁSmovil, the only carrier allowing Skype calls

April 17th, 2009 by Javier Rubio

There has been a lot of buzz around the new Skype iPhone app blocking calls over 3G networks because of mobile carrier´s pressure. The fact is that most 3G data plan contracts specifically block P2P and VoIP calls… So, given today market rules, it was just a matter of time for someone to break that apparently holy rule at a certain point, and stand out over its competitors.

MÁSmovil (an Spanish MVNO) not only allows VoIP calls, they are actively promoting the use of Skype and Fring over their networks (well, as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, they don´t have their own licensed frequency allocation, but they use another´s carrier network.. in this case, the service provider is Orange).

I wish this would be the first of a long list of carriers allowing VoIP… but this is simply not the correct time for this to happen. The true convergence of voice and data wireless networks will come with 4G, called LTE (Long Term Evolution) which is still far away from the current market horizon.

Even these are good news and provide an added value for this MVNO (for me a decisive one), I would have appreciated more transparency with their 3G prices comparisions, as they are a bit “tricky”.

For instance, when comparing with their stronger MVNO competitor, SIMYO, the charts show that 25 MB with MÁSmovil costs 0,75 €, which is better than the 0,99 of SIMYO. That´s completely correct, but they seemed to forget that with SIMYO you only pay 0,99 for the first 100 MB. Of course they don´t made a chart showing that you will pay the triple (3 €) for 100MB with them… on the other hand, MÁSmovil computes each single 3G connection as a minimum of 512 KB, in front of the 256KB gap of SIMYO, so forget configuring your mobile mail client for polling every 5 minutes (with both carriers).

Anyway, allowing VoIP over 3G networks is a big step forward for the final users.

New WiMax service in Japan

February 9th, 2009 by admin

UQ Communications – a Japanese consortium led by KDDI and also including Intel, JR East, Kyocera and several banks – launches a commercial Mobile Wimax trial service at Tokyo, Yokohama and Kawasaki. Nagoya and Osaka will also go online in June. This means the major areas of Japan will be covered at a 40$ monthly flat-rate, a rather interesting fee.

They also will offer a Wifi service on Shinkansen trains that will be available for all customers by September (though some commercial clients will have it by March).

We’ll have to wait patiently until we see this in Europe.

Docomo to offer 20% cheaper Androids

November 28th, 2008 by Javier Rubio

We all know the Android family could grow and multiply profusely, and we have unveiled before some of the upcoming devices from ASUS or even OpenMoko, but now the still little family is really happy and proud to arrive to the country where present technology is future for the rest: Japan.

NTT Docomo, largest Japan´s carrier, announced the launch of an Android based device next 2009, and what´s more, they said its 20 % cheaper than current devices!.

The device follows G1´s path, including a physical keyboard as a plus for the touch-panel screen, and it will most probably include the new Android updates scheduled for 2009 Q1, which includes SIM ToolKit support and an Input Method Framework, allowing new on-screen virtual keyboards with dictionaries and suggestion engines. If you want to know all the details for the Android roadmap, don´t miss this post.

Android´s entering on a market so advanced and different as Japanese by the hand of Docomo are undoubtedly great news for the family.

T-Mobile to offer first Android device

August 19th, 2008 by Javier Rubio

T-Mobile will offer an HTC phone running Android, probably on October. The concrete release date depends on how soon the FCC certifies that both HTC and Android meet the network standards. Even if it´s not a closed date, it will sure be launched before Christmas, for T-Mobile to benefit from the holiday sales.

There are still no specs for this first Android phone, which some people calls HTC Dream. And there are many other important questions: would T-Mobile launch an Android App Store? on which countries will it be delivered? Will it face iPhone´s tight price?

We´ll have to wait a bit more to finally touch the slowpoke Android.

iPhone 3G jailbroken

July 22nd, 2008 by admin

After doing a great job on jailbreaking iPhone 1.0, we all were waiting for ‘iPhone Dev Team’ jailbreaking iPhone 3G too. And it took only five days after launch.

Anyway, I think much fewer people is going to liberate its iPhone 3G. When first version of iPhone was released it was available only in few markets: USA, UK, Germany, France,… Many people from other unfortunate countries was interested in buying an iPhone, not signing the contract with operators, unlocking it and then using the iPhone with their current SIM – and tariffs- in their country.

Now, iPhone 3G is available much broader over the world and flights to New York for buying and iPhone will stop – specially from Europe.

Moreover – and this is a key point – iPhone 3G is given the end user only when the contract with the mobile carrier is already signed. So, you could unlock your iPhone and use it through your previous operator network, but this will not save you from paying the fees to the operator who sold you the iPhone.

For sure, not many people will be interesting in paying twice for its mobility bill.

Movistar : Real Flat Data Rates

June 17th, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

One of the most annoying things mobile operators do is calling their data plans “flat rates”.  Flat?? When I subscribe a data rate the last thing I want is having to control how much information I have downloaded. I think calling “flat rate” to a data plan that limits the amount of information you can download is just misleading customers.

Movistar has presented the first REAL Flat Data Plan in Spain. It’s not perfect, but the offer is clear for customers, without hidden information I’d like to say.  Here are the conditions:

  • Option “Internet en el Movil”. 10 € and 100 Mb included at 1Mbps / 384Kbps. When you excess this amount, the rest of the information is “NOT CHARGED” BUT THE DOWNLOAD SPEED IS REDUCED TO 68 Kbps.
  • Option “Internet en el Movil Plus” (What a name!!! ;P). 15 euros and 200 Mb included at 3Mbps / 1,4Mbps. The excess is not charged and the download speed is reduced to 128 kbps.

As I said before, this is far from being perfect, but comparing it with the rates offered by other mobile operators, THIS IS THE BEST OPTION.

I hope that mobile customers finally lose the fear of mobile internet access. Let’s see how the rest of mobile operators respond to these offers.
