Microsoft To Launch Windows Mobile Application Store

February 10th, 2009 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

According to several of the most respected on-line sources, including Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Wired and Information Week ( the original source of the information seems to be The Wall Street Journal), Microsoft plans to announce next monday a brand new Windows Mobile Application Store.

Monday 16th February seems to be the chosen day. Well, it looks pretty clever, since Steve Ballmer is making a keynote presentation in Mobile World Congress, taking place in Barcelona.

Along with this new service, Microsoft is also presenting My Phone service, an on-line repository of personal information for mobile devices. This seems to be true, since the official website has been up and running during the last weeks (in fact, it was discovered by fault, with the subsequent confirmation by Microsoft).

Don’t expect details of the new Microsoft Service. Nothing has been disclosed yet. Nevertheless, everything seems to be true.

I believe Microsoft will use this keynote to present more products and services, like Windows Mobile 6.5, My Phone, and so on… Last year’s MWC announcementes were, you know, disappointing. Hope they have learned the lesson. At least, Steve Ballmer will be present this year, and it assures the show. If you don’t what I’m talking about, check this video.

Google Sync Beta

February 10th, 2009 by Javier Rubio

I criticized Google recently for not including Gmail Tasks as part of Google Calendar instead of a Gmail Labs add-on, because of the missed synchronization capabilities of tasks management.

Despite that this fact has not changed, I won´t be surprised when it would, as Google folks can´t keep quiet. Now it´s time for extending a synchronization feature already available for Blackberry, to a bunch of SyncML capable devices, including iphone/ipod touch.

Windows Mobile 6.5 screenshots and apps!!!

February 9th, 2009 by amoros

As we already knew, Windows Mobile 6.5 (available on the second half of 2009) will have a new and more atractive interface, which is called “honeycomb interface”, as we can see in the below picture. We will see on the screen several joined polygons which form the honeycomb menu and an application will be available on each polygon. This interface gives a new and fresh look to the current Windows Mobile version which seems more like a Windows 3.11 style.

New WiMax service in Japan

February 9th, 2009 by admin

UQ Communications – a Japanese consortium led by KDDI and also including Intel, JR East, Kyocera and several banks – launches a commercial Mobile Wimax trial service at Tokyo, Yokohama and Kawasaki. Nagoya and Osaka will also go online in June. This means the major areas of Japan will be covered at a 40$ monthly flat-rate, a rather interesting fee.

They also will offer a Wifi service on Shinkansen trains that will be available for all customers by September (though some commercial clients will have it by March).

We’ll have to wait patiently until we see this in Europe.

4mpx iPhone camera

February 9th, 2009 by admin

Now you can upgrade your iPhone camera from 2mpx to 4mpx by software!

Occipital ClearCam turns your iPhone into a high quality camera with more than double the resolution ofthe original camera application.

How to get it? Easy! (^_^)

Install the application using Cydia (only jailbroken iPhones), search for ClearCam on Cydia´s browser, Select “Install” from the menu at the top of the screen, and then “Confirm”. Now you have a new camera application on your iPhone desktop.

How does it works? Easier than its installation!

Open the application, push the camera icon and it will capture 6 photos in 2.5 seconds, then it automatically create an enhanced 4·megapixel photo. Send it to your camera roll and enjoy the 4mpx picture.

Easy and useful, just if you want to take a special picture of something or somebody, because it takes a few seconds to enhance the picture, but you´ll obtain a sharpener and bigger picture than the original.

Free version is limited to take one picture in the album, you must to delete the picture to snap another one. You can use the trial version using all the features for free for a period of 15 days or pay 10$ to get the entire application.

Try it to believe it. I recommend it (~_^)

Gmail Labs launches Tasks for mobiles

February 6th, 2009 by Javier Rubio

Gmail Labs developed Tasks a while ago, and now a mobile version has been launched. On higher-end devices like iPhone and Android-based ones, you can add/edit your own lists of tasks, and on the rest there is only one list. Note that your Gmail language must be set to english in order to enable Gmail Labs. If you have Labs enabled, try Tasks just entering http://gmail.com/tasks from your mobile.

Since Google announced synchronization capabilities with Outlook had been added to Google Calendar, a lot of people have been eagerly awaiting Tasks management included in Calendar, as now just events are supported (and therefore, just events can be sync´ed) and people have started using Calendar as a bridge synchronization for other apps (e.g. Thunderbird + Lightning).

Is a bit of a pain that Google have been working on Tasks to get it to mobiles, when they could have been working to get it into Calendar and then to mobiles. But hey, that´s my view, perhaps you will find Tasks on Gmail for iPhone super useful…

Palm announces PreDevCamp

February 5th, 2009 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

Things are moving in Palm’s world!!! Short after presenting the awesome Palm Pre, Palm has just announced a DevCamp focused on this device.

The most remarkable fact of Palm Pre application development is the usage of standard web technologies such as HTML, CSS and Javascript. The good thing is that the potential developer base is awesome, including mobile application developers (like SevenClick) and web-based developers. We have certain doubts about how deep Palm will allow developers to access. I mean, javascript is not the quitessence of security, and allowing access to contacts, certificates, Telephony API, etc… will be a bit risky if not treated carefully. Let’s see…

For all of you who doesn’t know what’s a DevCamp, I’ll try to explain. It’s very simple. A bunch of developers/fanatics/geeks/freaks/put your own adjective here/people get together to talk and work around a topic, the Palm Pre in this case. Companies usually organize these events to foster application development and to allow developers get in touch with the gurus behind a technology. In my point of view, results are always interesting since developers can share knowledge and impressions. It has nothing to do wih sharing business cards, but sharing knowledge.

If you are interested in PreDeveCamp, check the official website.
