Android releases its code

October 24th, 2008 by Javier Rubio

Just one day before the first mobile phone running Android (T-Mobile´s G1) hit the streets this wednesday, Android and the Open Handset Alliance have released Android´s source code. That’s one small download* for (a) man, one giant leap for openness in the mobile industry.

* If you consider 2.1GB is small :D

The code can be downloaded here and you will find detailed instructions on the download page.

This previously announced and eagerly awaited step gives Android an extreme advantage over all others. Till now the only open-source mobile OS was OpenMoko, and it lacks the commercial, manufacturer and vendor support Android has.

Of course, such a release opens the door to the community to experiment and dig deeply, and we will surely watch on the next weeks a wave of ports to other platforms, specially HTC gadgets. If you are interested, there already exists a few ports thanks to the XDA guys (XDA-Developers) like the port to Kaiser, Vogue & Neon or Polaris, but there are all still based on pre-opensource Android and are not fully functional.

As I said, this is one giant leap for openness in the mobile industry, and we on Sevenclick want to give our sincerely congratulations to the Android team.
