Handset-stored images to e-paper

October 16th, 2008 by Marta Tejel

We sometimes would like to have a larger screen in our mobile in order to view some photos that have been taken with our phone with good quality, or in order to read a document stored in our phone in a handy way. KDDI R&D Laboratories Inc (one of the most important cellular carriers from Japan) propouses a device with which you can do this wiressly, and without neither computer nor TV.

This prototype system, “Portable Viewer System“, has been developed using e-Paper technology.  The system transmits an image stored in a mobile phone through infrared, and displays it on a 13.1-inch color electronic paper display. The display uses Bridgestone Corp’s Electronic Liquid Powder technology which can render 4,096 colors, and takes approximately 12 seconds to redraw the near A4-paper size images on the screen (not very impressive). The display only has a power button because the handset sending the information will handle all operations.

The creator company claims that it is the first electronic paper that displays images stored in a mobile phone, but it is not said anything about the availability.
