Android is coming…

September 23rd, 2008 by Javier Rubio

We finally saw Android in action last week, on the Google Developer Day in London (and hopefully, we will be able to admire it on site next September 25th in Madrid).

Now Strategy Analytics has published and important study for Google: sales are expected to be 4 percent of all smartphones sold in the U.S on Q4. This means 0.4 million units (over 10.5 million smartphones to be sold), a small piece of the cake, but not bad as Google is coming so late to the party.

The release date is still not official, but T-Mobile USA is going to announce it within the next 12 hours. The first Android phone is rumored to hit the streets on October 20th, and this are some of the specs (by CrunchGear):

  • 3.1 Mpx camera without video recording.
  • GPS
  • No stereo bluetooth (A2DP)
  • Dimensions: 4.6 x 2.16 x 0.63 in  (11,68 x 5,49 x 1,6 cm)
  • 480×320 65K color screen
  • 5 hour talk time, 130 hour talk time
  • Expandable up to 8GB
  • Full QWERTY keyboard!

Android will require a Gmail account and a data plan, and will provide direct access to Google apps like Search, Maps, Calendar, Gmail, Google Talk and Youtube.

Strangely enough, HTC first Android phone won´t support video recording nor A2DP… why relapse on iPhone flaws? Also it worths pointing out the curious T-Mobile Strategy: only stores within a 5 miles range of a 3G covered area will sell the phones. All other purchases will be led by T-mobile.com.
