Mobile phones as music instruments?

Yes, it’s TRUE!!! It’s not a question, it’s reality!

KDDI has developed a new set of mobile devices in its project called au Design Project x Yamaha. So far, everything is allright. But what makes this amazing news is that those mobile devices can also work as music instruments! I’m not talking about software, it’s about the design and functionalities of the devices.

One model (Sticks in the Air) can be used as drumsticks. In this case the device can divide in two peaces and even the wooden texture of the sticks looks real. It has movement sensors for the beat to provoke a reality feeling.

Other peace called Box to Play looks like a normal phone, but it can be opened adopting a box shape and can even be closed again by the corners of the box we choose. One of the faces can be used as an scratching disk, others are screens which show sound levels diagrams and the inner faces of the box can be used as speakers.

There are other devices that hide a piano keyboard, a trumpet or even an harmonica. All of them have been designed by a foreign and Japanese team of young innovators (including Marianne Bailey).

Here you can see some video examples, enjoy!
