iPhonishing: Makayama TouchBrowser

April 25th, 2008 by Javier Rubio

Just some months have passed since the first iPhones reached the streets, but that´s more than enough for becoming the main reference in interactive interfaces.

It hasn´t been a big deal, though. Rivals like HTC Touch with its TouchFLO interface or Nokia N95 “n-gage flavoured” are magnificent competitors, but have nothing to do against the Apple iPhone style.

And now, thanks to Makayama TouchBrowser, all of us who can´t afford the price of an iPhone will be able to enjoy an iPhone-style Internet browser for our Windows Mobile gadgets, which means you will forget the stylus at last!. Thanks god for releasing us of the old scroll suffering!

Past April 17, Orange started tests of their new Read&Go device, involving 150 users that will have free access to the service for 2 months.

Read&Go service follows the same scheme of Amazon’s Kindle. It makes use of e-paper for a more comfortable reading of books and newspapers and wireless technologies for providing contents. In this case, Orange seems to bet on adding WiFi support to 3G technologies – opposing Amazon support of only Sprint’s EVDO network.

Five mainstream French daily newspapers have team up with Orange for provinding contents: Le Monde, Le Parisien, Les Echos, L’Equipe, Télérama… Of course, information will be houly updated.

Users will also initially get 30 preloaded books, stored on the reader’s 1GB of internal memory.

We have no data about commercial plans for Read&Go, but I think it’s time for such a device/service to hit European market.

Simyo, Lunar acres

April 24th, 2008 by admin

Simyo the low-cost operator of mobile telephony continues to pleasantly surprise. In line with its policy of offering their customers something unique, from the day on April 23 to the first 100 people who buy a Sony Ericsson w380i through their website, they give away one acre of the Moon.

Although this may seem strange to give away pieces of satellites, this can be done thanks to Moon states, a site where you can buy pieces land of the Moon, Mars and Venus.

In my opinion, it sounds pretty funny, but I don’t know until this point can be legal, even send documents and certificates of ownership.

Among them we can probably see a mobile booted Android and the other ones booted Windows Mobile interface Manila (new version of TouchFLO).

Moreover, they could surprise us with a new model with two different version (with and without sliding QWERTY board, the far left model and the far right of the second row in the picture).

Tag Heuer Meridiist

April 22nd, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

Some time ago, Tag Heuer announced plans to launch its own mobile phone label. Now, we can see the earlier results of this.

Tag Heuer’s Meridiist is a high-end mobile device. Expensive. Beautiful. And, of course, full equipped. It’s metalic case reflects its quality. It’s also equipped with a double 60,5 carat sapphire crystal. Wow.

If you are thinking about purchasing it, you should take into account that it could be in a similar price rate than LG Prada and Bang & Olufsen’s mobile devices.

Handwriting Recognition for iPhone

April 21st, 2008 by admin

Hanwang has released, as a beta, a new handwriting recognition for iPhone. It is only available in Latin and chinese yet.

The only way to get HWPen is to add iphonecake.com/src/all as a source in your Installer and grab it from there.

You can follow the instructions of this video to know how to install and use it.

This software is 1.0 beta, there are many errors that people of Hanwang must fix, but it is the best way for people who hates type on the on-screen keyboard. In my opinion i think is better and faster using the keyboard.

Fring for your iPhone

April 16th, 2008 by admin

Avoid calling with your iPhone by your mobile operator if you can do it for free by your WiFi, because Fring is here as a pre-release version, and it will give headaches to mobile operators, in special to AT&T.

Created by Fring people in conjuntion with Holon Institute of Technology Using the native app (always under Jailbreaked iPhone), it’s now possible to place and receive calls via WiFi connection. Besides doing Skype and the like, the app also lets you connect for chats via MSN Messenger, ICQ, GTalk, SIP, Twitter, AIM, and Yahoo!.

You can get the application for free by loading up Installer with the company’s repo.

Google has created a new video channel in YouTube with videos related to their mobile applications. This not brand new stuff since it’s out there since late November’07. They have named it ‘Google Mobile Help’.

Tough it is an official channel, there are not many videos by now. Just a few talking about Google Maps for Mobile, YouTube for Mobile and Gmail for mobile.

But we think this is a great new way of supporting Google’s mobile applications and we encourage Google to go on with this channel.

We hope this innitiative will help users to configure and make use of mobile applications (Google’s ones, at least), thus powering the popularity of mobile applications.

iHealth?

April 9th, 2008 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

Those who personally know me, knows that I love running. One of my latest toys has been an 8Gb iPod Nano with Nike+. This little device is a pedometer, allowing you to keep track of your workouts.

The Nike+Apple marriage has been strong for years, with an enormous community surrounding Nike+iPod.

But, it looks like Apple wants the whole pie for itself. One of the last patents filled by Apple is a system based on iPhone accelerometers to perform workout tracking and management. This way, the iPhone or iPod will keep track of our workouts, suggesting improvements and even diets!!!.

I think that one of the most significant features of the combo iPod Nano and Nike+ is the size, being really small. Replacing it with an iPhone or a bigger iPod will surely get worse the user experience.
