Samsung´s Water Fuel Cell

April 29th, 2008 by Álvaro Arregui

Micro-fuel cell which power a mobile phone for 10 hours of continuous usage that runs on water, really?

Yes, it is true. Samsung Electro-Mechanics has developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that runs on water, it will be available on 2010.

“When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas,” explained Oh Yong-soo, vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ research center. “The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power.” Other fuel cells need methanol to produce hydrogen, while Samsung’s needs only water.

That is a great news after all, although it wont be available till 2010, it is a great solution to keep this world clean, or a bit more.
