
Over the last months, news from Motorola had moved from announcements of new devices to news and rumours of bad results. We have already talked about it. The leaders of Motorola’s mobile division have been stepping down since then.
For all this, now the split comes as no great surprise. In fact, Motorola has been seeking a buyer for its handset unit for months. The split should be completed during 2009, with shares in the mobile division being issued to existing shareholders.
Motorola has been manufacturing good, general public liking devices for years. But, although it’s also growing in number of units sold, mobile handsets market is growing in competence. Nokia keeps increasing their market share, Samsung and LG are pushing, …
We’ll keep tracking Motorola’s mobile division evolution with interest. For sure, more independence, new leaders and some economic measures (I wish not too dramatic), will facilitate Motorola’s mobile division - whatever its name will be - going back to profitability.
