Nuviphone, Garmin’s first cell phone

February 6th, 2008 by Rafael García

Mobile handsets market is red-hot. At this moment, when new innovative devices (iPhone, Kindle) and new platforms (Android) hit the market, when Nokia’s market leadership is bigger than ever, when some venerable phone makers are in a hard time, and Nokia’s leadership is broader than ever, … we have another unexpected character on stage.

Garmin comes up with its first cell phone: Nuviphone. In words of Cliff Pemble, the firm’s president and COO, it’s the “breakthrough product that cellphone and GPS users around the world have been longing for.”

And, in fact it would be. These are their features:

  • 3.5 inches touch screen
  • GPS, navigator and preloaded maps, of course
  • Garmin Online, with real-time traffic, fuel prices,…
  • Bluetooth
  • WiFi
  • HSDPA
  • Built-in camera
  • Mobile web-browser

And of course, all the standard functionality of a today’s cell phone. We will be tracking all Nuviphone related information. Specially, we would desire a platform for third parties applications development.

Release is expecty by Q3 2008 in the USA. Price and sales partners will be announced in the future.

I can’t wait for it!
