PSP, a Spanish company specialized in GPS fleet management have presented the iPhone version of its star product, MobileFleet. This way, PSP completes MobileFleet offer, strengthening the mobile client with this brand new version of the web part. Taking advantage of iPhone unique features regarding interactivity, user experience and web integration, SevenClick has developed one of the first fleet control applications for this device.

Let’s take a look at what MobileFleet offers.

MobileFleet is a web-based service that allows you to track vehicles in real time. Using a special hardware attached to the vehicle, fleet managers are able to control start and stop times, working periods, routes, work, etc. Using GPS, MobileFleet is able to provide detailed information about the routes followed by the different elements of a fleet. This way, and using Google Maps advanced drawing capabilities, fleet managers can see the path followed by each and every one of their vehicles, with a very precise detail level.

The service provides other functionalities, such as reporting, fleet management, credit management, and so on and so forth.

One of the most remarkable features offered by MobileFleet is the mobile phone client interface. This way, fleet manager can check fleet information while they are on the go.

The brand new iPhone version has been developed by SevenClick using web technology. Currently, this is the only official means to develop for the iPhone, as long as the official SDK has not been published yet. The technology chosen for this project has been GWT, Google Web Toolkit. Using iPhone advanced web browsing capabilities, MobileFleet iPhone Edition contains every single feature included in the web version.

The interface has been adapted to the particular iPhone needs, specially focusing on user interaction. Every element have been adapted to meet iPhone web development best practices. It has also been developed taking into account network traffic, handling over control to the user in terms of how much information should be shown. To achieve this, AJAX has been chosen as the enabling technology.

The functionality included in MobileFleet iPhone edition can be summarized in the following list:

  • Real Time Fleet tracking. Using Google Maps integrated into Mobile Fleet iPhone web, fleet managers can check at a glance the path followed by each and every vehicle of their fleets.
  • Real Time information update. Using AJAX, the information about the user’s fleets is updated in real time. This way, the mobile phone becomes an essential tool for fleet tracking.
  • Satellite View. Thanks to Google Maps, you can track the route followed by a vehicle over actual streets and roads, not just lines drawn on a map.
  • Real Time Alerts. Fleet managers are able to define several alerts on their fleet’s vehicles. If one of these alerts raises, they will be notified in real time thanks to the AJAX capabilities of the iPhone.
  • Detailed Reports. You can obtain different reports of your vehicles, defining the information to be included. Once the information is obtained, you’ll also be able to download an ADOBE PDF document with the report. This way, you can check it later on.
  • Fleet Management Features. You can configure your fleet from your iPhone. Fleet managers will be able to buy new bonds, configure updating intervals, etc..

Pretty complete taking into account the limitations of a mobile device. We are sure that only the iPhone is able to provide such advance features to this service. Just an AJAX enabled browser could include real time vehicle tracking and google maps integration.

PSP plans to bet on iPhone during the following months. Once the SDK is out, a new and improved version of MobileFleet iPhone Edition will be launched, taking advantage of the operating system capabilities.
