OpenMoko will release a new phone

January 8th, 2008 by Rafael García

OpenMoko, the project for developing a completely open source cell phone, will release a new cell phone, the Neo FreeRunner. Some months ago, OpenMoko released its first Linux-based handset, Neo 1973.

The new device will include important improvements. While running on the same Linux platform, FreeRunner will hava a faster 500MHz processor, WiFi and motion sensors.

All this new stuff will be bundled in the same package as Neo 1973.

In words of Steven Mosher, vicepresident of OpenMoko, “We added WiFi, motion sensors, faster processing, and improved graphics, creating a compelling mass market device for open-source development. The open-source community was key in achieving that goal. Without them, this remix of the Neo would not have been possible.”

A press-only preview has been announced to take place during CES.
