SMS application for iPhone

December 28th, 2007 by Rafael García

Some weeks ago, we talked about sending MMS on iPhone. I still can’t understand it. But, moreovere, SMS sending is not an easy task on iPhone.

The SMS application lacks some useful features we had got used to. For example, sending the message to several receivers or forwarding existing messages.

Now we have found a better unofficial SMS application, provided by the community.

Of course, the installation is via Installer.app, that has become a de facto standard for installing unofficial applications on iPhone.

Sogecable and mobile operator Orange, have agreed to launch, by the start of 2008, a joint service composed of:

  • Regular mobile phone service.
  • High-speed Internet.
  • Pay-per-view television.

In a press release, both companies said that the service will include television contents for Orange’s third-generation mobile users.

The company didn’t provide neither financial details of the agreement, nor information about the number of subscribers they hope to add with the new services.

Last June, Sogecable signed a similar agreement with Telefónica, as Spanish telecom operator looking forward to combining television, Internet and voice calls in a single package to boost revenue and compete with others operators.

Android phone release in February ‘08?

December 28th, 2007 by Álvaro Arregui

Since the leak of some pictures of an Android prototype, a lot of people are talking and spreading rumours about a possible early release of an Android phone.

The last one sets the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (february 11-14) as the place and the time of that release. Although the prototype shown is far from being attractive, it is probably that Google may present a quite “cool” handset.

To be continued… in two months!

Meanwhile, you can check out the Mobile World Congress website for further information on the event.

Nokia Siemens completes LTE trial

December 28th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

The Nokia Siemens joint venture focused on network hardware announced several weeks ago the beginning of 2.6 Ghz band LTE trials. Now, at the end of 2007 we know that the tests have been a big success, reaching 173 Mbps during a Berlin based test.

173Mbps WOW!!! Well, it has been at best conditions possible, but even a 25% of that speed would be impressive nowadays. Recall that LTE is years away from being commercially launched, but this kind of news is the best publicity campaign possible for such a new technology. Isn’t it?

Nokia opens Ovi to Apple

December 27th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

According to CNN Money.com, Nokia’s management board member Anssi Vanjoki mentioned that Ovi is open to Apple. These are the exact words he said to Berliner Zeitung. “In Finnish, Ovi means door. And our door is open. Of course, Apple can get into our portal. We even invite  Steve Jobs to do so”. He also mentioned that iTunes would be a great enrichment to Ovi users.

Are you kidding me??? Why would Apple be interested in losing its dominant position in music market? I think that these words will remain as an anecdote. iTunes integrated into Ovi????

Voice over IP, performed on a mobile phone, is the future of telecommunications as well as the network operators’ biggest threat.

We already wrote about Gizmodo when, in september, a new version for Java-enabled mobile devices was released.

Now, both the Symbian and the Java versions, have been updated to version 1.1.006.  Apart from performance and stability improvements, a new contact search functionality have been included.

Download the new version here (For Nokia N73, N80, N81 N82 & N95).

Read the S60 series User Guide here.
