Twitter now supports alerts by key words

October 3rd, 2007 by Rafael García

As was published in Twitter blog by September 24, Twitter has recently released a new feature: alerts driven by key words. Up to now, you were able to receive alerts (SMS or IM messages) from your registered Twitter users.

With this new feature you will receive alerts not related to people, but related to some key words you provide. Then, any message containing that key words will be forwarded to you on you IM application or via SMS.

The manner for managing alerts is based on text messages. Really easy:

  • track something : register a new alert based on word ’something’.
  • untrack someting : unregister the previous alert.
  • track : returns a list with your current registered alerts.
  • track off : turns off all the alerts.

By now, this ‘API’ is very very simple. We hope some kind of more advanced filters will be added to Twitter, and of course the combination of them must be allowed. So, we could combine ‘key words’ and ‘location’ filters, for example.

Twitter blog said that they would go on working to improve this new feature. Have a look at Twitter blog entry!
