First QR Code in Spanish Press

September 24th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

QR Codes are very popular in Asia. Japan, South Corea… are countries where the usage of these QR Codes, as a way to access mobile internet information  mainly but not only, is so extended that you can even find magazines exclusively dedicated to these QR Codes.

As usual, Europe and more concretely Spain are two or three steps behind Asian market. Fortunately, little by little these codes are appearing in Occidental countries.  Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia published last weekend what can be considered “The first published QR Code in Spanish market”. Not very useful, but interesting movement after all.

MOWSER, one step ahead mobile web

September 24th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

Mobile Web browsing is the main issue that must be solved in order to achieve mobile web massive usage. Solutions like Opera Mini help to solve it, but Why do I have to install an additional mobile browser in my phone? Don’t get me wrong. I love Opera Mini and its features, but some people don’t. MOWSER to the rescue!!!

MOWSER proposes another approach to non mobile adapted web sites. It transcodes web content to a format able to be rendered by mobile phone browsers. Results may vary depending on the site being rendered, but average results are good enough to recommend the service.

Along with page transcoding, it allows to search main search engines using keywords like ys (Yahoo! Search), gs (Google Search), etc..

Definitely a recommendable service!!!

New iPhone virtual GPS navigator

September 21st, 2007 by admin

Recently, some rumours of a future GPS chip placed inside the iPhone have spread along the Web. Whether true or false, any user who would like to have this feature will have to wait until may 2008 (when the 3G upgrade is supposed to be).
Unless you download and start using the new Navizon virtual GPS navigator which is now available for iPhone too (it is also available for BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Java).
The application is designed to use the WiFi hotspots and phone towers of its sorroundings to triangulate your location (with an estimated error or 70 – 100 meters) and paint it using Google Maps. The system also uses data gathered from other Navizon users who have regular GPS devices.
Navizon has a trial period of two weeks but after it you have to pay 25$ for a time unlimited licence.

British just love SMS

September 21st, 2007 by admin

Brithish love SMS more than someone else. They send an average of up to 100 SMS per month!!! Well, I think I could know somebody who send 100 sms per month, but… this measure said that every british send that amount of SMS. That compares with an average of 65 for Germans and 32 for Americans.
This data comes from a worlwide survey of 10000 mobile phone uesrs by the agency Universal McCann. The study also showed that the British are more inclined to use their mobile phones for texting than for talking. UK mobile owners dedicate less than half their mobile usage to direct conversation.

Telefonica will bring 3G iPhone to Spain in 2008

September 19th, 2007 by admin

Spanish newspaper ABC claims to have been informed that iPhone won’t be for sale in Spain until May 2008. By that moment, Telefonica will commercialise a new generation of 3G iPhones.

While having to wait until then is very discouraging, at least we know that a 3G iPhone is coming. Although we should take this news carefully.
