Market rumours: Microsoft to takeover RIM

September 4th, 2007 by rggiron

Past week, some speculations about Microsoft studying the takeover of RIM shook the market and the Canadian firm shares were up 3.35%. RIM is the manufacturer of Blackberry devices, that are commonplace within enterprise users. Not the same within retail users, tough RIM has made big efforts providing its handsets with richer multimedia capabilities.

Microsoft has never been used to make big buys, although they recently made a $6bn acquisition, aQuantive Inc, their bigger ever operation. This makes analyst to consider Microsoft would probably try a $40bn acquisition, that is RIM’s value on the market today.

This movement would be a good response from Microsoft to Apple and Google (if gPhone‘s rumours are confirmed), and would position Redmond company centered on professional market, where Microsoft has better know-how than their competitors, while not forgetting retail market at all.
