September 28th, 2007 by admin

[youtube xAuCv8ci-jA]

Following the path of the LG Prada, Samsung has teamed up with fashion designer Giorgo Armani to develop a set of gadgets (a mobile phone, a Bluetooth stereo set, a flat TV,…) in order to enter the expading market of fashionable technologies (LG Prada, Ted Baker, Mandarina Duck, Levi, …).

Technical  features:

  • Tri-band GSM.
  • 2.6 inch QVGA touch screen.
  • Only 10.5 thick.
  • 3 Megapixel camera.
  • Music player. Bluetooth stereo headset.
  • MicroSD memory slot.

“Chic” features:

  • External design by Armani.
  • Leather carrying case.
  • Big Armani logo on every device (ready to boost user’s ego).

One remarkable thing is the Bluetooth stereo handset. It has designed by Armani too and is based on the Samsung WEP-410.
The phone will be sold at Giorgo Armani shops as well as some phone stores by November 2007. The price is still unknown but I think that people who are used to buy at Armanis’ don’t usually care about prices…

NTT DoCoMo, Inc. today announced flat-rate data communication plans that will take effect on October 22.

Plans will cost 4,200 yen/month (incl. tax) for up to 500,000 packets, then rise on a pay-as-you-go basis up to a maximum of 10,500 yen/month beyond one million packets. The plan requires subscription to the new “mopera U U Flat-Rate HIGH-SPEED Plan” (840 yen/month) or “Business mopera Internet (HIGH-SPEED)” (630 yen/month) for Internet access (certain access points may not be compatible with the plans).

DoCoMo will also offer the 64Kbps (best effort) “Flat-Rate Data Plan 64K” for 4,200 yen/month (incl. tax). The plan requires subscription to the new “mopera U U Flat-Rate 64K Plan” (525 yen/month) or “Business mopera Internet (64K) plan” (315 yen/month) for Internet access (certain access points may not be compatible).

The plans cover sending/receiving messages and viewing still content (text and photos) on Web sites. Streamed video, downloaded FTP file transfers, i-mode communications and voice/videophone calls are not covered. Packet communications outside Japan, as well as via domestic access points that are not compatible with flat-rate packet communications services, will be charged on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The last paragraph scares me. I will never subscribe to a internet access service controlling which services I can access. Customers should pay for the access not for the service they use. Why can’t I use P2P on my mobile? Or VoIP? the last question has a clearer answer but I don’t like it anyway.

LG + DivX = Viewty!!!

September 27th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

LG is including DivX decoding capabilities in one of their mobile phones, Viewty (LG-KU990). The mobile phone will be available in mid. October in Europe. The LG Viewty includes 120 fps video recording as well as manual focus, image stabilizer and handwriting recognition that makes editing easy on the Viewty’s 3-inch wide LCD touch screen.

The press note says nothing about recording capabilities. Watching DivX movies in a 3″ screen could be funny, but not functional. Anyway, it looks like there’s a market for this kind of features (Don’t forget iPod Video). If the Viewty would include recording capabilities, that would be another different song. Recall that mobile phones storage capabilities is very limited and including this recording format will improve it enormously as long as DivX videos are quite small ( in fact, it depends on DivX profile used to encode). Maybe in next model, who knows.

MANYBOOKS : eBooks for your Mobile

September 27th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

Clear and concise. Just the title explains it all…. Over 18.000 free eBooks ready to be downloaded to your mobile device (not just phones but PDAs, iPOD or eBook reader).

The site has a mobile version that allows to navigate through the endless categories, authors…. One of my favorite options is suggestions (You don’t need explanation needed, Don’t you?). Once you have your book chosen, the service presents different formats including:

  • jar file (JAVA MIDP)
  • Mobipocket
  • eReader
  • RTF

I’ve been testing the JAR version and I have to say that the results are not very good. It uses a sofware named mjBook 4.0 to read the content. It comes with very limited functionality in my opinion. No chapters, no bookmarking, no pictures, no commands… I think that JME platform allows richer user interfaces. Ok, it’s free and it works, but it is not enough currently.

Anyway, an interesting service for all those that spend long times traveling. At least, is lighter than carrying several books in you bag!!!!!!!!!!!
