SUN changes its stockname from SUNW to JAVA

August 24th, 2007 by Jose Manuel Cristobal

SUN’s CEO Jonathan Schwarz has announced in his blog that SUN has changed its stock name from SUNW to JAVA. There is nothing hide behind this change; it’s just a necessary update to reflect SUN’s current brand reality.

What does SUNW means? SUNW comes from SUN’s early times and it means “Standford University Network Workstation”. My question is: If you have to choose a stock name for such a company,Which one would you choose? In my opinion, despite of people thinking in SUN as a hardware manufacturer, the most known brand name associated with SUN is JAVA. Not Solaris, OpenOffice or SPARC. JAVA is the answer.

Jonathan mentions that SUNs strategy remains the same. This change is just an update to reflect the company’s current reality.
