Keep an eye on your mobile phone

Mobile Phone Security has gone one step further. OKI Japan has just released an iris recognition software which uses the camera of your mobile phone (if it has a resolution of, at least, one megapixel).

This is, in fact, a new middleware layer which greatly improve mobile phone security (is supposed to give as false positives as one per 100.000) and right now it is available, of course, only in Japan.

Although, iris recognition is not so cutting edge. In fact OKI released its first iris recognition system in 1998 and a new and improved version in 2002. The point, this time, is the fact that the software is designed and implemented to be used on a mobile phone.
Once again, we are witnessing how the upgrading in mobile phones’ hardware is diluting the line between regular computers, PDAs and mobile phones.

Interesting technology. I can see a direct application to mobile payment. People are very reluctant regarding providing their credentials over their mobile phones. In fact, it that scenario prospers, it could be a strong kick in Liberty’s ass. :D
